What is the Udyoga Parva?

The Udyoga Parva (उद्योग पर्व) is the fifth of the eighteen books of the Mahabharata. Its name means “Book of the Effort”, and this site tells 48 stories drawn from it.

Udyoga Parva Summary

With the exile served, both sides send envoys and gather armies while every attempt at peace fails. Krishna goes to Hastinapura as the Pandavas' ambassador asking for five villages, is refused, and reveals his cosmic form when Duryodhana tries to seize him. Kunti visits Karna at the river to tell him he is her firstborn, and he promises her that he will spare every brother but Arjuna. The book carries Vidura's long counsel to the sleepless Dhritarashtra, the teaching of Sanatsujata on death, the story of Amba reborn as Shikhandi, and the ranking of the warriors before eleven and seven armies face each other at Kurukshetra.
