Dharma
The epic central and least settled word.
Whenever dharma weakens and disorder rises, I bring myself into being. To protect the good, to destroy those who do harm, and to establish dharma, I come into being age after age.
yada yada hi dharmasya glanir bhavati bharata
KrishnaBhagavad Gita 4.7-4.8The most quoted statement of avatara in Indian literature. Let go of all duties and come to me alone for shelter. I will free you from every fault. Do not grieve.
sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam sharanam vraja
KrishnaBhagavad Gita 18.66The final verse of instruction, called the charama shloka by later commentators. Where there is dharma, there is victory.
yato dharmas tato jayah
GandhariUdyoga Parva, and repeated across the epicGandhari says it to Duryodhana when he asks her to bless him with victory, knowing what it means for her own son. The line recurs throughout the epic in other mouths. Dharma destroyed destroys; dharma protected protects.
dharma eva hato hanti dharmo rakshati rakshitah
The epic in its own voiceVana ParvaA maxim the epic states in its own voice and repeats in several books; the same line appears in the law literature. Non-injury is the highest dharma.
ahimsa paramo dharmah
The epic in its own voiceAnushasana Parva, and elsewhereRepeated many times, including in the instruction Bhishma gives from his bed of arrows, inside a poem about a war that kills almost everyone. Argument settles nothing, the scriptures disagree, and there is no sage whose opinion can stand as proof. The truth of dharma is hidden in a cave. The path is the one the great have walked.
dharmasya tattvam nihitam guhayam mahajano yena gatah sa panthah
YudhishthiraVana Parva, the questions of the yakshaAsked at the lake what the path is, the most honest answer in the epic about how hard dharma is to know. Whom did you lose first, yourself or me? If you had already lost yourself, what was left of you that could stake me?
DraupadiSabha ParvaDragged into the assembly hall, she puts a legal question to the whole court that nobody present is able to answer. Hear the whole of dharma, and having heard it, hold to it: do not do to another what you would not want done to you.
atmanah pratikulani paresham na samacharet
BhishmaAnushasana ParvaFrom the long instruction Bhishma gives Yudhishthira while lying on the bed of arrows. An assembly where the elders say nothing is no assembly, and men who do not speak dharma are not elders.
ViduraSabha ParvaVidura is the only voice raised against the dice game while it is still going on. Where was dharma when a boy alone was surrounded by six of you? Where was it in the hall, when a queen was dragged in and you laughed? Ask about the rules after you have answered that.
KrishnaKarna ParvaKrishna reply when Karna, his chariot wheel sunk in the ground, appeals to the law of fair combat. To abandon one who is devoted to me, who has taken shelter with me and asks for protection, is a sin without end. I will not enter heaven on those terms.
YudhishthiraMahaprasthanika ParvaAt the gate of heaven, refusing Indra chariot because the dog that followed him up the mountain is not allowed in. With my arms raised I cry out and no one listens. From dharma come wealth and pleasure. Why then is dharma not practised?
VyasaSvargarohana ParvaThe last word of the epic author, in the short passage called the Bharata Savitri at the very end of the work.
Duty and action
What a person owes to the work in front of them.
Do your work established in discipline, letting go of attachment, indifferent to success and failure alike. That evenness is what is meant by yoga.
yogasthah kuru karmani sangam tyaktva dhananjaya
KrishnaBhagavad Gita 2.48The definition of yoga that the Gita gives before any discussion of practice. Better your own duty done imperfectly than another duty done well. It is better to die doing your own work; another work brings danger.
shreyan svadharmo vigunah para-dharmat svanushthitat
KrishnaBhagavad Gita 3.35The svadharma verse, answering Arjuna wish to live as a renunciate instead of a warrior. I have told you the knowledge that is more secret than any secret. Consider it fully, and then do as you choose.
vimrishyaitad asheshena yathechchhasi tatha kuru
KrishnaBhagavad Gita 18.63After seventeen chapters of argument, the choice is handed back to Arjuna. I know how to break into the formation. I was never taught the way out.
AbhimanyuDrona ParvaSaid before he opens the chakravyuha on the thirteenth day, on the promise that the others will follow him in. I eat the food of this house. My arrows belong to the throne even when my blessing does not.
DronaUdyoga ParvaDrona explains why he will fight for Duryodhana against the pupil he loves best. Bhishma and Kripa give the same reason.
Karma
Action, its residue, and the fruit no one can claim.
Your right is to the work alone, never to its fruits. Do not act for the sake of the fruit, and do not be attached to inaction either.
karmany evadhikaras te ma phalesu kadachana
KrishnaBhagavad Gita 2.47Krishna answers Arjuna refusal to fight by separating the act from its reward. A man is born alone and dies alone. He crosses his difficulties alone, and alone he eats the fruit of what he has done.
BhishmaShanti ParvaFrom the teaching on release in the books spoken after the war.
Time and fate
Kala, the devourer, and the limits of human effort.
I am time, grown old, come forth to destroy these worlds. Even without you, none of these warriors drawn up in their ranks will live.
kalo 'smi loka-kshaya-krit pravriddho
KrishnaBhagavad Gita 11.32Spoken from inside the universal form, when Arjuna asks what he is looking at. I will hold my life until the sun turns north. Until then, keep me here on this bed of arrows.
BhishmaBhishma Parva and Anushasana ParvaFallen on the tenth day, able to choose the hour of his own death, he waits out the rest of the war and fifty-eight nights beyond it. When I heard that Arjuna had strung the bow and struck the target at the svayamvara, then, Sanjaya, I had no hope of victory.
DhritarashtraAdi ParvaThe refrain of the blind king in the opening book, repeated dozens of times, each time naming another omen he chose to ignore. Time cooks all creatures. Time puts everything to sleep and wakes it again.
kalah pachati bhutani
The epic in its own voiceAdi Parva and elsewhereA saying the epic returns to whenever a character asks why a disaster could not be prevented.
War
The oaths, the refusals and the field itself.
On the field of dharma, on the field of the Kurus, gathered together and wanting to fight, what did my sons and the sons of Pandu do, Sanjaya?
dharma-kshetre kuru-kshetre samaveta yuyutsavah
DhritarashtraBhagavad Gita 1.1The first verse of the Gita. The blind king says my sons and the sons of Pandu, and the whole war is in that distinction. Do not give in to this weakness. It does not become you. Shake off this small faintness of heart and stand up.
klaibyam ma sma gamah partha naitat tvayy upapadyate
KrishnaBhagavad Gita 2.3Krishna first reply to Arjuna collapse, before any philosophy at all. I will not give them enough land to stand a needle point on, not without war.
DuryodhanaUdyoga ParvaHis answer to the last offer of peace, in which Yudhishthira had come down from a kingdom to five villages. I will break the chest of this man and drink his blood, and I will shatter the thigh that he bared before her. If I do not, let me not reach the world my fathers went to.
BhimaSabha ParvaSworn in the assembly hall while Dushasana is dragging Draupadi by the hair. Both halves of it are kept, years later, in front of witnesses. If Jayadratha is alive at sunset tomorrow, I will walk into the fire myself.
ArjunaDrona ParvaSworn on the evening of the thirteenth day, on returning to camp to find Abhimanyu dead. I will tell you what happens on the field as it happens, and I will not soften it.
SanjayaBhishma ParvaGiven the sight of the battlefield by Vyasa, Sanjaya becomes the eyes of the blind king and the narrator of all four war books. They killed my father with a lie while his weapons were down. Let them learn tonight what his son is willing to do.
AshwatthamaSauptika ParvaBefore the night raid on the sleeping camp, the act that destroys whatever the victory was worth.
Friendship and loyalty
Debts of gratitude the epic treats as binding.
Many births have passed for me, and for you as well, Arjuna. I know them all; you do not.
bahuni me vyatitani janmani tava charjuna
KrishnaBhagavad Gita 4.5Arjuna asks how Krishna could have taught anyone born generations earlier. To those who think of nothing else and worship me, who stay constant, I carry what they lack and keep what they have.
ananyash chintayanto mam ye janah paryupasate
KrishnaBhagavad Gita 9.22The yoga-kshema verse, recited daily in many households. Radha is my mother and Adhiratha my father, because they took me up when no one else would. I will not sell that for a kingdom on the eve of the fighting.
KarnaUdyoga ParvaHis answer when Krishna tells him privately that he is Kunti eldest son and offers him the throne and the loyalty of the Pandavas. The source of a river and the origin of a hero are both hard to trace. Let him be a king, and then let him fight.
DuryodhanaAdi Parva, the weapons tournamentWhen Kripa refuses Karna a duel with Arjuna for want of a lineage, Duryodhana makes him king of Anga on the spot. The line is traditionally quoted in this form from the tournament scene. Whoever hates Arjuna hates me, and whoever follows Arjuna follows me. Know that Arjuna is half of my body.
KrishnaVana ParvaKrishna states the friendship as a fact of identity rather than of affection.
Grief
The mothers, the widows and the cost of winning.
As a man puts off worn-out clothes and takes new ones, so the embodied self lays aside worn-out bodies and enters others that are new.
vasamsi jirnani yatha vihaya
KrishnaBhagavad Gita 2.22Death recast as a change of clothing, spoken to a man about to kill his own teachers. For the born, death is certain; for the dead, birth is certain. You should not grieve over what cannot be avoided.
jatasya hi dhruvo mrityur dhruvam janma mritasya cha
KrishnaBhagavad Gita 2.27Krishna closes the argument from mortality before turning to duty. My limbs give way, my mouth is dry, my body shakes and my hair stands on end.
sidanti mama gatrani mukham cha parishushyati
ArjunaBhagavad Gita 1.29Arjuna, seeing his family in both armies, before he drops the bow. You will have five sons when this is over. Either Arjuna will be dead and I will remain, or I will be dead and he will. The number will not change.
KarnaUdyoga ParvaWhat he gives Kunti when she comes to the riverbank to claim him as her firstborn. You could have stopped this and did not. Thirty-six years from now you will see your own people kill one another as mine did, and you will die alone in a forest, with no one to mourn you.
GandhariStri ParvaGandhari curses Krishna on the battlefield, standing among the bodies of a hundred sons. It comes true exactly. This is not victory. We have killed our own teachers and our own brothers for a piece of land, and I would rather have begged.
YudhishthiraShanti ParvaAfter the war, refusing to be crowned. The whole of the Shanti Parva is an attempt to talk him out of this position.
Wisdom
The answers given under questioning, at lakes and on deathbeds.
It is not born and it does not die. Having been, it never ceases to be. Unborn, eternal, unchanging and ancient, it is not killed when the body is killed.
na jayate mriyate va kadachin
KrishnaBhagavad Gita 2.20The first argument Krishna offers Arjuna: what he fears to destroy cannot be destroyed. Weapons do not cut it, fire does not burn it, water does not wet it and wind does not dry it.
nainam chhindanti shastrani nainam dahati pavakah
KrishnaBhagavad Gita 2.23On the indestructibility of the self, in the middle of an argument about arrows. Brooding on objects breeds attachment to them; from attachment desire is born, and from desire, anger. Anger makes confusion, confusion ruins memory, ruined memory destroys judgement, and the man is lost.
dhyayato vishayan pumsah / krodhad bhavati sammohah
KrishnaBhagavad Gita 2.62-63The chain from thought to ruin, which the epic then illustrates in almost every character. Lift yourself by yourself; do not let yourself sink. You alone are your own friend, and you alone are your own enemy.
uddhared atmanatmanam natmanam avasadayet
KrishnaBhagavad Gita 6.5On self-discipline, in the chapter on meditation. The mind is restless, Krishna, turbulent, powerful and unyielding. Holding it seems to me as hard as holding the wind.
chanchalam hi manah krishna pramathi balavad dridham
ArjunaBhagavad Gita 6.34Arjuna objection to the practice of meditation he has just been taught. Desire, anger and greed: these three are the gates of ruin that destroy the self. Let them go.
trividham narakasyedam dvaram nashanam atmanah
KrishnaBhagavad Gita 16.21The three gates, listed after a long description of the demonic temperament. What is found here may be found elsewhere; what is not here is found nowhere.
yad ihasti tad anyatra yan nehasti na tat kvachit
The epic in its own voiceAdi ParvaThe epic claim about itself, made in its opening book. Day after day creatures go to the house of death, and those who remain believe they will not. What is more astonishing than that?
ahany ahani bhutani gachchhanti yama-mandiram
YudhishthiraVana Parva, the questions of the yakshaHis answer when the yaksha at the lake asks what the greatest wonder is, with his four brothers lying dead on the bank. The mother is heavier than the earth, the father higher than the sky, the mind quicker than the wind, and thought more numerous than grass.
YudhishthiraVana Parva, the questions of the yakshaAnother of the yaksha riddles, answered at the edge of a poisoned lake. Desire is never quieted by getting what it wants. Like fire fed with butter, it only grows.
na jatu kamah kamanam upabhogena shamyati
YayatiAdi ParvaYayati, who borrowed his son youth in order to keep enjoying the world, gives it back with this conclusion. The weak man who has the strong for an enemy, the man robbed of everything, the man eaten by desire, and the thief: these do not sleep.
ViduraUdyoga Parva, the counsel of ViduraDhritarashtra, unable to sleep after the failed peace mission, sends for Vidura, whose answer becomes the Vidura Niti.
Kingship
What the epic asks of those who rule.
Where Krishna, master of discipline, stands, and where Arjuna stands with his bow, there are fortune, victory, prosperity and settled right. So I believe.
yatra yogeshvarah krishno yatra partho dhanurdharah
SanjayaBhagavad Gita 18.78The last verse of the Gita, spoken by the narrator reporting the field to a blind king. Ask whether the age makes the king or the king makes the age, and know that the king is the maker of his age.
BhishmaShanti Parva, on the duties of kingsBhishma on the duties of a ruler, answering Yudhishthira who has just won a kingdom he does not want. Give up one man to save a family, a family to save a village, a village to save a country, and the whole earth to save yourself.
tyajed ekam kulasyarthe gramasyarthe kulam tyajet
ViduraUdyoga Parva, the counsel of ViduraVidura advises abandoning Duryodhana for the sake of the dynasty. Dhritarashtra will not do it. Give them five villages and there will be peace. Refuse, and there is nothing left to say.
KrishnaUdyoga Parva, the peace missionKrishna final terms as envoy in the Kaurava court, reducing the Pandava claim to almost nothing to avoid the war. Peace is worth almost any price. But a peace that requires you to hand over what is right is only a slower war.
KrishnaUdyoga ParvaKrishna counsel to Yudhishthira, who would rather beg than fight, before the embassy to Hastinapur. The hour for which a kshatriya woman bears a son has come. If you will not act now, when will you?
KuntiUdyoga ParvaKunti message to her sons through Krishna, sent with the story of Vidula, who shamed her defeated son back into the field.
