Shapa (śāpa)

A shapa is a curse, speech charged with accumulated austerity that binds its target until an appointed release. Curses drive more of the Mahabharata's plot than any human decision: Pandu cannot touch his wives, Karna cannot recall his weapon at the moment he needs it, Arjuna spends a year as a dance teacher, and Krishna's whole clan is destroyed by Gandhari's grief. Because a curse usually carries a loophole, the epic uses them to fuse fate and character into a single mechanism.
