Yoga (yoga)

योग

What Yoga Means in the Mahabharata

Yoga means yoking, and in the Mahabharata it names both the discipline that harnesses mind and senses and the union that discipline aims at. The Bhagavad Gita defines it twice in passing, as skill in action and as equanimity, and then spends eighteen chapters describing paths to it. The epic also uses the word in its older, harder sense of meditative concentration, as when Drona drops his weapons and leaves his body by yoga rather than waiting for the sword.
