Where was Hastinapur?

Hastinapur is the capital of the Kuru kingdom throughout the epic: the court of Shantanu, Bhishma, Dhritarashtra and finally Yudhishthira, the hall where the dice were thrown, the city the whole quarrel is about. The name is usually explained as the city of the elephant, after an ancestor named Hastin.

The identification with the modern village of Hastinapur in Meerut district is old and generally accepted. B. B. Lal excavated the mound there between 1950 and 1952 and found a sequence of occupations, including a Painted Grey Ware phase conventionally dated to roughly the eleventh to sixth centuries BCE, with iron, copper, and evidence of horses and cattle. Above that level he found a clear flood deposit, after which the settlement was reoccupied in a different style.

That flood matters because the Puranas say the Ganga washed Hastinapur away in the reign of Nichakshu, a descendant of Parikshit some generations later, and that the capital was moved to Kausambi. The archaeological sequence and the textual claim agree in outline, which is one of the few such agreements anywhere in this material. It does not confirm the epic events; it confirms that the tradition knew a real site with a real flood history.

The modern village is a pilgrimage centre with temples and a Jain complex, since three Jain tirthankaras are held to have been born at Hastinapur. The archaeological mound stands nearby.

The distance matters for reading the war. Hastinapur lies roughly ninety kilometres from Kurukshetra, close enough for the campaign geography of the epic to work: the armies camp on the plain, embassies ride out and back, and news of each day reaches the blind king in the capital while the fighting is still going on.
