Gudakesha (guḍākeśa)

Gudakesha means conqueror of sleep, a name for Arjuna that records his ability to practise archery in the dark and to stay awake through what would exhaust anyone else. Krishna uses it in the Bhagavad Gita at the moment he begins to teach, which reads as a quiet reminder that this is a man capable of discipline even when he claims he cannot act. It also carries a second reading, since sleep here stands for ignorance as much as for rest.
